Located downhill from the Buoncammino hill and west of the Roman Amphitheatre (now accessible from Viale Merello), Orto dei Cappuccini was created in 1595 by the Order’s religious monks and was used for the cultivation of medicinal plants needed by the nearby convent. Within the area are several cisterns from Roman times, which were used in the past for the construction of the nearby Roman Amphitheatre.

Bastione di Saint Remy – Passeggiata Coperta

The majestic bastion of Saint Remy houses the Passeggiata Coperta, Cagliari’s historical living room atop its ancient walls. Inaugurated in 1902 as a banquet hall, the promenade has been used over time for various purposes: infirmary during World War I, complementary school in the 1920s, peripheral office of the Ministry of the Treasury and shelter for the homeless after World War II. In 1948, it also hosted the first edition of the International Fair of Sardinia.
