Call for Applications

Purpose

The progress of research in organizational studies relies on the commitment and creativity of advanced PhD students, post-doctoral fellows and junior scholars who explore new questions, new methods and new phenomena. EGOS puts special emphasis on supporting the academic development of younger scholars and their positioning and integration in the academic community(ies). The purpose of this workshop is to help junior scholars to publish and refine their paper, facilitate their academic socialisation; emphasize the importance and offer support in improving junior scholars' publication capabilities and provide an arena for the exploration of issues on the cutting edge of research in areas.
The Post-doctoral and Early Career Scholoars pre-Colloquium Workshop is an active exchange, based on a dialogue among junior and senior academics that seeks to strengthen the junior scholars' involvement with the EGOS community and help them in finding their ways in the academia.

 

Content & objectives

This year, the pre-Colloquium Post-doctoral Workshop focus on three elements:

  • Better understanding of the changing publication game
  • Improving your reviewing capabilities
  • Improving your paper to submit it

This workshop is a two-day event, taking place on Monday (July 4, 2016) and Tuesday (July 5, 2015), prior to the main 32nd EGOS Colloquium in Naples.

 

The publication process. Editors of reputable international journals will share insights and practices on the art and craft of a scholarly publication. The module includes lectures, discussions and tutored group work on the participants' proposals for journal articles. Among the topics covered are the academic journal article as a specific genre of a scholarly publication, identification and development of the main argument of an article, choosing the appropriate audience and journal for a specific topic, overcoming typical problems in writing an article, the role of editors, referees and authors in the process of publishing, other practical aspects of writing and publishing, experience with publishing and how to review other colleagues' manuscripts (discussions within small groups with referee).
The reviewing process. Reviewing is the other side of the publication process. Understanding and appreciating the review process will help in reviewing as well as publishing one's own work. Based on a reflexion on your own experience as a reviewer [you will be asked to review a paper], the workshop will examine the process with experienced editors and reviewers.
The faculty involved in the workshop includes scholars from a variety of geographical and disciplinary backgrounds. In 2016, scholars who are convening this pre-Colloquium workshop are: Vincent Mangematin (GEM, France), Stefan Häfliger (Cass Business School, UK), Jean-Pascal Gond (Cass Business School, UK), Gazi Islam (GEM, France) and Garance Marechal (University of Liverpool, UK).

 

Application guidelines

To be considered for participation in the workshop, participants need to have completed their doctoral dissertation in the last three years!
Please apply for admission to the workshop by Monday, January 11, 2016 at the latest! You should do so by uploading (via the EGOS website) a single PDP file of application that includes:

  • A short letter of application containing full details of name, affiliation and address (postal address, phone & email);
  • A statement of why the applicant considers it valuable to attend the workshop + curriculum vitae;
  • A detailed abstract of a paper (4–10 pages). The full paper will be discussed during the workshop. We encourage you not to submit the same paper as to the main Colloquium. Do not hesitate to test new ideas, new framing.

 

Please note!

  • Applications that do not adhere to the applications guidelines above will not be accepted; no late submissions will be allowed!
  • The selection process of participants will consider the scientific potential of the project and its match with the faculty ability to discuss it and to provide useful suggestions.
  • Applicants will be notified on acceptance by February 15, 2016.
  • Given the interactive nature of the workshop, the number of participants will be limited to 20 to 25. Hence, it is advisable to apply as early as possible.

 

Upon acceptance to the workshop, participants will be given the opportunity to update their paper by June 1, 2016 (fixed deadline!) via the EGOS website.


Please note that when you are accepted and when you agree to participate, this counts as your commitment to come to and to attend the workshop!

Last, but not least: Participants are strongly encouraged to apply for other pre-Colloquium activities, for example for one of the Paper Development Workshops (PDWs) or for the Women's Network Meeting 2016 offered on Wednesday, July 6, 2016, as well as to consider the submission of a paper to one of the sub-themes of the main EGOS Colloquium. The Convenors & the Faculty:

Vincent Mangematin (Convenor) is Professor of Strategic Management and Management of innovation at Grenoble Ecole de Management, France. His research focuses on emerging processes (research, innovation, business model innovation) and quality assessment in fast moving environment (signal, reputation, status). He published more than 70 papers in leading journals like 'Strategic Management Journal', 'Research Policy', 'Long Range Planning', 'Journal of International Business Studies', 'Technological Forecasting and Social Change', 'Technovation', 'Journal of Technology Transfer', 'International Journal of Technology Management' and 'Small Business Economics'. He received more than 2,800 citations on Google Scholar (according to Publish or Perish) and more than 500 citations on Web of Science (Thompson). He served in the Editorial Boards of 'Organization Studies', 'Research Policy' and 'Long Range Planning'; and he is Associate Editor of 'Technovation and M@n@gement'. Since 2005, Vincent is the EGOS responsible in charge for the Post-doctoral and Early Career Scholoars pre-Colloquium Workshop.
Stefan Haefliger (Convenor) is Professor in Strategic Management and Innovation at Cass Business School, City University London, UK. Prior to joining Cass Business School, he worked as a researcher at ETH Zurich (Switzerland) where he is currently affiliated as a faculty member at the Department of Management, Technology and Economics. Stefan held visiting positions at Università degli Studi di Trento (Italy), MIT (USA), Hitotsubashi (Japan) and Politecnico di Milano (Italy). Stefan's research and teaching focuses on co-creation strategies as well as knowledge reuse, creation, and design in innovation processes. He serves as an Associate Editor for 'Long Range Planning', and his research has appeared in journals such as 'Management Science', 'Research Policy' and 'MIS Quarterly'. Stefan's and his co-authors' work on knowledge reuse and private-collective innovation contributed to a deeper understanding of the development strategies and practices of open source software developers as well as the entrepreneurial consequences of user innovation.
Filomena Buonocore (Convenor) is Associate Professor of Organization and Human Resource Management at University of Parthenope, Naples, Italy. She has taught undergraduate courses and master's and PhD level courses on human resource management and organizational behavior. Her current research interests include diversity management in organizations, stereotype threat, work-family enrichment and family supportive leadership, error reporting behaviors in healthcare. She has authored articles in "Journal of Management", "Tourism Management", "Journal of Managerial Psychology" and other scholarly journals. Filomena Buonocore is member of scientific board of ASSIOA, the Italian Association of Organization Studies.
Jean-Pascal Gond (Faculty) is currently Chair Professor of Corporate Social Responsibility at Cass Business School, City University London, UK. His research builds on organization theory and economic sociology and investigates the social construction of corporate social responsibility and responsible investment; his recent works also focus on the performativity of economic forms of rationality. His research has been published in journals such as 'Organization Science', 'Organization Studies', 'Journal of Management Studies', 'Human Relations', 'Business and Society', 'Business Ethics Quarterly', 'Journal of Business Ethics' and 'Revue Française de Gestion'.
Gazi Islam (Faculty) is Associate Professor of Business Administration at Grenoble Ecole de Management, France. His current research interests include the organizational antecedents and consequences of identity, and the relations between identity, group dynamics and the production of group and organizational cultures. In addition, he attempts to link identity and organizational culture to wider issues of national culture, ideology, and civil society. His work been published in journals such as 'Organization Studies', 'Leadership Quarterly', 'Organization', 'Human Relations', 'The American Journal of Public Health', 'Group and Organization Management', 'Journal of Management Inquiry', 'Group Dynamics', 'Journal of Business Ethics' and 'American Psychologist'.
Garance Marechal (Faculty) is Lecturer in Strategic Management at the Management School of University of Liverpool, UK. She has convened streams and workshops at various international conferences, including EGOS Colloquia, the EURAM Conference, the Academy of Management Conference and the Art of Management and Organization Conference. She recently chaired a conference on the "Dark Side of Organization", and she is currently editing a Special Issue on the same theme.
