EGOS Women's Network

The EGOS Women’s Network started at the Amsterdam Colloquium in 2008, after planning discussions through the preceding year. The aim of the network is to improve the representation of women in academia, stimulate the advancement of women in higher education, and facilitate networking among established and newer colleagues.

The Network facilitates a platform for women academics to get to know and connect to other women, learn about strategies for dealing with academic life in its infinite variety, and discuss how to make academic moves, seize opportunities, and embody scholarship. It does so by organizing activities at EGOS Colloquia, including activities oriented toward mentoring, publishing, and other career-related issues, with a special focus on matters particular to women’s lives.

The 2008 Amsterdam kick-off meeting of the Women’s Network was very successful. Over 160 women and a few men crammed into a room for a gathering that featured a presentation by Barbara Czarniawska on foreign women professors as double strangers in academia, followed by a discussion.

Network activities at the upcoming Barcelona Colloquium are:

Informal meeting on Wednesday, July 1, between 18.00 and 19.30 in ESADE building 3, B020

Small table discussions on the key issues that mark women's careers in academia, followed by a welcome cocktail sponsored by the EGOS Organizing Committee in building B, floor A. Those who want to participate are kindly requested to send an email to WomanNetworkEGOS@gmail.com, so we know how many people we can expect.

Sub-plenary session on gender in academia on Friday, July 3, between 14.00 and 15.30

Sub-plenary with a presentation on gender practices in professorial recruitment and selection by Marieke van den Brink (Radboud University Nijmegen, The Netherlands), followed by a panel discussion with leading women scholars - Professors Martha Feldman (University of California, Irvine), Silvia Gherardi (University of Trento, Italy) & Saija Katila (University of Kuopio, Finland) - and a general discussion on opportunities and strategies to counter the barriers for women to rise to the top of academia.
