Call for Applications

EGOS strongly encourages doctoral students to become active members of its vibrant and diverse community of organization scholars. The EGOS pre-Colloquium PhD Workshop provides a platform for students working towards a doctorate in organization studies to interact with, and learn from, fellow students and top scholars in various areas of research and scholarly inquiry. It is designed as a springboard for successful academic careers by examining important issues such as publishing, reviewing, and collaborative research; the event also provides a number of networking opportunities.

What to expect?

The pre-Colloquium PhD Workshop is offered to a limited number of students in advanced stages of the dissertation journey (selection based on the quality of application) and best suits the needs of those working with qualitative or mix-method designs.

It takes place onsite (with the option to participate online), at the University of Bergamo, all-day on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, before the main 42nd EGOS online Colloquium 2026 hosted by the University of Bergamo.

The workshop covers the following topics, among others:

  • Publication process. Participants will examine the publication process together with experienced scholars and journal editors in order to learn from cases of success and failure in formulating, writing, submitting, and revising papers for top-journal publication.

  • Art of reviewing. Experienced scholars and journal editors will also offer insights into the art of reviewing as an essential component of the peer-reviewed publication process. Understanding and appreciating the review process will help in writing high-quality reviews as well as in successfully addressing reviewers’ com-ments and publishing one’s own work.

  • Dissertation journey. The workshop will enable participants to approach their doc-toral dissertations with renewed vigour by engaging in discussions on research design and methodologies with renowned colleagues and by reviewing their dis-sertation proposals with the help of others – fellow participants and more senior researchers who work in the respective area of scholarly inquiry.

  • International academic career. The mix of scholars from diverse academic back-grounds and institutions from around the globe is a key strength of EGOS, as well as of this workshop. Participants will gain exposure to similarities and differences across countries and continents in how academic processes work. This will also enhance their understanding with regard to different career opportunities and career paths.

The EGOS pre-Colloquium PhD Workshop is organized primarily around participative interaction. Students will not be asked to formally present their own work; rather, students will extensively comment on their dissertation projects in small roundtable sessions, with a senior academic as a facilitator and discussant.

Mode of Participation

The EGOS 2026 Colloquium is planned as an online event, but the pre-Colloquium workshops on Tuesday will be organized onsite at the University of Bergamo. We encourage participants to take part in presence; however, there will be the possibility to take part online as well. This means that plenary talks and panels will be streamed, and for the interactive discussions, we will designate online participants to an online roundtable.

Participants that come to Bergamo can expect to engage in face-to-face interactions, enjoy informal networking opportunities, and participate in in-person roundtable discussions designed to foster deep dialogue and connection with peers and senior scholars. All this will take place in dedicated spaces conducive to both collaborative and individual work, sourrounded by the inspiring setting of Bergamo’s historic city centre. Participants will also be supported throughout the day with regular breaks and a thoughtful provision of Italian coffee, food, and refreshments.

Application Guidelines

Please apply for admission to this workshop by Friday, January 9, 2026, 12:00 CET at the latest. Please note that the EGOS submission system can be slow during the final hours of this deadline, so we recommend submitting a bit earlier.
Late submissions sent via email either to the EGOS Executive Secretariat or to us, the convenors of this PhD Workshop, cannot be considered, irrespective of whether you intended to upload your file on time!
You should do so by uploading (via the EGOS website) a single PDF file that contains the following mandatory sections:

  • Surname + first name

  • Affiliation + email address

  • Year of PhD study (out of total years), e.g. 2nd year (out of 3)

  • Supervisors (name, affiliation)
  • Title of your PhD project
  • Keywords (max. 6, min. 4)

  • Main research questions (max. 3)

  • Your theoretical puzzle (max. 250 words)

  • Your research methods (max. 250 words)

  • Your expected contributions, including the academic field to which you seek to contribute (max. 250 words)

Please note!

  • Applications not adhering to the guidelines will not be accepted; no late submissions will be allowed.

  • The information required above is for the selection process and for the allocation of students to mentoring roundtables. You will be able to share a full PhD proposal with your mentor later on in the process.

  • The number of participants is limited (applications in recent years by far outnumbered admissions). The quality of the application and the student’s potential to benefit from the EGOS PhD Workshop are the primary criteria for admission.
  • You should not apply if you have already participated in an EGOS PhD Workshop in one of the previous years.
We do not accept students in the 1st year of their PhD (as the Colloquium’s topic is geared towards more advanced PhDs e.g. publication).
  • When applying for the PhD workshop, you will be asked to indicate your mode of participation (in person or online) should your application be accepted. Online participants in the PhD workshop will have access to streamed lectures/discussions and participate in virtual roundtables.  The main Colloquium 2026 will be held entirely online!

  • Please ensure you can attend: a late cancellation might block an opportunity for one of your colleagues.
  • Applicants will be notified about their acceptance/rejection by the end of February 2026.
  • For administrative inquiries, contact the EGOS Executive Secretariat: executive-secretariat@egos.org

Participants are strongly encouraged...

  • to consider the submission of a short paper to one of the sub-themes at the main 42nd EGOS online Colloquium 2026 hosted by the University of Bergamo.
